AI-assisted coding is reshaping development teams faster than most organisations realise. Not because AI writes perfect code - it doesn't - but because it shifts where time gets spent. The work that remains after AI generates the first draft isn't less demanding. It's different. And teams that figure this out early are pulling ahead.

The Bottleneck Migration

When AI handles initial code generation, the bottleneck moves to verification, security, and operations. Someone still needs to review what the AI produced. Spot edge cases. Ensure it meets security standards. Integrate it properly. Deploy it safely. These tasks don't disappear - they become the critical path.

But you might need more senior people. More reviewers. More security specialists. More operations engineers who understand deployment at scale.

The shape of teams is changing, not just the size. And that's harder to adapt to. Hiring practices, promotion paths, and skill development all need rethinking. A team that treats AI as a productivity multiplier without adjusting structure is heading for trouble.

Practical Steps for Builders

If you're building with AI assistance right now, three things matter immediately. First, treat AI output as draft. Always. Second, build review processes that assume AI makes plausible-sounding mistakes. Third, invest in testing and security infrastructure before you scale up AI-generated code. The mistakes compound faster than you think.

For business owners, the question isn't whether to adopt AI-assisted coding. It's how to adopt it without creating new risks. Smaller teams sound appealing, but only if the remaining team has the skills and tools to verify what AI produces. Rushing to shrink teams without building proper guardrails is a false economy.

The bottleneck has moved. Teams that recognise this early - and adapt their structure, processes, and priorities accordingly - will benefit most. Those that treat AI as a simple productivity tool without changing how they work will struggle. The technology is here. The question is whether organisations can keep up.
